Lymphoma: cancer unknown
Can be cured of lymphoma?
Through the advancement of research, we can now treat lymphomas. The treatments are more targeted and therefore more effective and better tolerated.
However, the prognosis depends on several factors: the type of lymphoma, the age of the patient and related illnesses, the stage of the disease as well as other biological prognostic factors.
In Hodgkin's disease, complete remission is obtained in nearly nine out of ten after initial treatment and relapse cases are rare. The standard treatment is essentially:
In the localized forms, a short chemotherapy associated with sessions of radiotherapy on the lymph achieved;
In the disseminated forms, in a longer chemotherapy which can last 6 to 8 months.
The evolution of non-hodgkiniens lymphoma is variable depending on their type.
Thus the small cell lymphomas, so-called indolent lymphomas, generally very slow, but the answer of the disease to chemotherapy is incomplete and relapses are not uncommon. Conversely, large cell lymphomas, so-called aggressive lymphomas, evolve very quickly without treatment. But thanks to the effectiveness of current treatments, healing is frequent (90%) in the localized forms, and more and more often resulting in extended forms. Similarly, Burkitt Lymphoma, which requires an urgent therapeutic support, is very aggressive but very sensitive to chemotherapy.
Treatment of lymphomas not hodgkiniens has experienced a revolution in the past ten years with the arrival of monoclonal antibodies, obtained by genetic engineering.
Associated with chemotherapy (immunochimiotherapie), they increase significantly the effectiveness of the treatment. The immunochimiotherapie is today the standard of non-hodgkiniens Lymphoma treatment.
Also, the aggressive lymphomas, fast-paced, can be cured in about half of cases with the effectiveness of current treatments. As indolent lymphomas, slow-growing, they are now considered as chronic diseases, current treatments to get some degree of their evolution and significantly extend the service life of patients in good conditions of quality of life (without relapse).
Lymphomas require prolonged and regular monitoring in order to support the side effects of the different treatments and early detect a possible recurrence
