Treatment of ocular Lymphoma

Ocular lymphoma can affect the inside of the eyeball (intraocular Lymphoma), the conjunctiva (transparent mucosa that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and the outer surface of the eyeball), eyelids or structures which are found in the orbit (orbital cavity). In the presence of ocular Lymphoma, can be used in the following treatment options. Your healthcare team you will suggest treatments according to your needs and will discuss with you to develop a treatment plan.

Radiotherapy
Radiation therapy is one of the main treatment of ocular lymphoma. It is usually given in the form of external radiotherapy. Usually both eyes treated since ocular Lymphoma may eventually appear in the other eye. You can also administer radiation therapy to the brain and the spinal cord to destroy any cancer cells that may have spread to these organs.

Sometimes given chemotherapy with radiotherapy to treat ocular lymphoma. It's what we call a chemoradiation.

ChemotherapyChemotherapy is one of the main treatment of ocular lymphoma. We can:

administered it into a vein (intravenous) as systemic chemotherapy;
administer it in the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord (cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF) as intrathecal chemotherapy.
inject it directly into the eye as intraocular chemotherapy;
apply it to the surface of the eye such as topical chemotherapy.
The type of chemotherapy used to treat ocular Lymphoma depends on the exact type of lymphoma. These include the following:

methotrexate
procarbazine (Matulane)
Vincristine (Oncovin)
ThioTEPA (ThioTEPA)
cytarabine (Cytosar, Ara - C)
mitomycin (Mutamycin)
5 fluorouracil (Adrucil, 5 - FU)

Targeted treatmentIs sometimes used in the treatment to treat ocular lymphoma. We can:

administered it into a vein (intravenous) as a systemic treatment;

Targeted drugs to treat ocular Lymphoma include these:

rituximab (Rituxan)
ibritumomab (Zevalin)
Surgery
Is sometimes used in surgery to treat Lymphoma of the conjunctiva. The types of surgery include:

eye resection
cryosurgery
Immunotherapy
Interferon alpha - 2b (Intron A) is an Immunotherapeutic drug that is sometimes used to treat ocular lymphoma. It is usually given in a drop applied directly to the eye. The application of the drug to the surface of the eye is a topical treatment.

If you cannot or do not want to receive cancer treatment
You might want to consider care designed to make you feel better without treating the cancer itself, perhaps because cancer treatments work, it is more likely that they improve your condition or their side effects are difficult to tolerate. Other reasons may explain why you can not or do not want to receive cancer treatment.
